Process Engineer- Injection Molding

Duties / Responsibilities of this position include: 

  • This position works closely with the Tooling Engineering, Process Engineering, and Manufacturing to deliver new products on time, on cycle and on specification, and to optimize and troubleshoot the Injection Molding and Automation processes and equipment.
  • Process and troubleshoot new molds at L&L and Suppliers. Develop processes for production to use in set up of molds. Program and train robots and pick/place systems in work cells.
  • Lead process improvement processes and new technology processes to achieve goals for profitability, safety and ergonomics. Develop processes to manufacture new injection molded products and to optimize and improve current production processes.
  • Train Process Technicians and others on new Injection Molding Machines, Robots and other equipment.
  • Review mold designs and cycle time assumptions as required by Tooling Engineers and the Quote Team.
  • Establish manufacturing parameters based on the statistical capabilities of the process to produce high quality product. Maintain and improve process capabilities of existing products.
  • Travel to support Suppliers and other L&L locations. In USA up to 30%, Foreign travel 5-10%.

Expectations / Key Performance Indicators of this position include:

  • Support Injection Molding Area on assigned shift: address downtime and efficiency; communicate concerns to leader and area manager.
  • Complete assigned projects on time.
  • Reduce scrap and optimize cycle time at L&L and Suppliers.
  • Maintain excellence in Safety on the manufacturing floor.

Authorities of this position include:

  • Develop standard processes that produce quality process at best cycle time
  • Implement (hands-on) developed processes and train manufacturing personnel in proper startup and processing of tools.
  • Coordinate with the Automation and Mold Engineering teams to develop process parameters. Participate in mold trials, DOE and PPAP runs.
  • Support plant projects including new Injection Molding Machines, Material Feed systems, etc.
  • Work with the Skilled Trades manager, Toolroom manager and/or personnel to coordinate activities to ensure completion of systems according to plan. Maintain timeline and document any issues that affect completion of a project on schedule.
  • Develop and document operating, safety, and maintenance instructions.
  • Train operators, area leaders, support, maintenance and other personnel and others the safe operation of Injection Molding Machines and other equipment. Set a positive example to the entire team in the areas of safety.
  • Research and investigate advanced mold coatings, surface treatments, coolants etc.
  • Perform DOE’s and manage the development and documentation of process parameters for incorporation on the production floor.
  • Respond to production needs communicated in Gemba reviews and other meetings.

 

Job Requirements:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technical field strongly preferred; equivalent experience in injection molding processing may be considered

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of systematic molding process
  • Excellent Verbal and Written Communications skills
  • Experience in part processing at the press
  •  Operation and adjustment of Injection Molding Machines

Additional Skills Desired:

  • Coursework in Plastics/Injection Molding
  • 3+ years direct manufacturing experience in Injection Molding
  • Fanuc, Sepro or other automation programming experience
  • RJG training or equivalent Injection Molding training
  • Working knowledge of floor paperwork
  • Oracle or other ERP system familiarity
  • DOE and Systematic Problem Solving training
  • Familiarity with Moldflow analysis
