Duties / Responsibilities:

The Senior Mold Tooling Engineer (SMTE) is responsible for understanding the state of the art, from a tooling and processing standpoint, and selectively and strategically applying technology to develop and maintain a competitive advantage for our products made using molding methods. The SMTE is also responsible for the tactical deployment of molding technology, assuring the gate review process is followed, ultimately delivering tools and processes that are production ready, on time and meeting or exceeding goals for build and manufacturing cost. He/she is the person responsible to assure the needs of both Product Engineering and the intended production operation are met.

The Senior MTE will lead all aspects of mold development, including developing concepts for quote, working with purchasing to select suppliers, leading tooling gate reviews, reviewing and approving tool designs, keeping tooling timelines and open issues logs, balancing the needs of Product Engineering, the intended production source and the tooling provider, communicating with the PMs, organizing and attending tool try outs, resolving open issues, and finally managing the handoff the tooling to the production facility. In doing so:

  • Develop, improve and utilize standards to communicate mold build requirements to internal and external suppliers.
  • Support development of other MTEs in future with regard to state of the art mold design and build using lessons learned. Share experiences and document areas where training can further develop the team.
  • Have a deep knowledge of tooling created for specific parts, and to drive tool and product designs that can be manufactured at the lowest possible cost. Challenge current assumptions to meet and exceed cost goals.
  • Provide on-site presence and support for mold builds and try-outs.
  • Actively participate in product and tooling design reviews, to identify and correct concerns with part design, cycle time assumptions, and mold construction before steel is cut. Negotiate and drive win-win solutions to these issues.
  • Evaluate flow and thermal considerations and use the results to prescribe changes that will anticipate and solve issues with molded parts.
  • Provide support to Purchasing efforts to identify mold suppliers and build shops as part of the Supplier Development effort.
  • Lead cross functional tool design reviews as required to obtain buy-in for tooling approaches.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all internal and external communication regarding tooling status on assigned projects.
  • Assist teams as required in problem solving and issues resolution.
  • Communicate and coordinate with L&L global molding team members to assure the best methods and suppliers are being evaluated around the globe, and to support selection of global suppliers.

Expectations / Key Performance Indicators

  • Performance to schedule on milestones and deliverables including phase exits and mold build checkpoints.
  • Delivery of mold projects on time (adjustments well-communicated when necessary avoiding customer dissatisfaction)
  • Tooling solutions that meet or exceed budget and performance requirements.
  • Right-First-Time part metrics that reflect incorporation of lessons learned to prevent recurrence of issues.
  • Tool build costs per commitment
  • Reduction in tool build costs over time reflecting implementation of design for cost considerations

 Authorities of this position

  • Provide support to tooling suppliers. Travel as necessary to keep projects on schedule and on target.
  • Lead continuous improvement of mold and tool standards for injection mold tooling.
  • Innovate and drive down cost of tooling using alternate materials and construction methods.
  • Keep up-to-date on state of the art mold and machine technologies. (This may require travel)
  • Assist Mold Tooling and Process Engineers to develop knowledge and attain goals.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related sciences is desired. Mold making and bench experience is desired.
  • Min. 8 years working experience for injection parts.
  • 2K injection mold experience is must.
  • Mold flow analysis is preferred.
  • Auto Interior and Exterior working experience is preferred.
  • Ability to manage and track multiple programs in all phases of development;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to negotiate with outside suppliers and processors;
  • Ability to use systematic problem solving to formally work problems, working knowledge of FEA;
  • Ability to work with tool and part CAD;
  • Well organized, with good record retention and reporting practices;
  • Responsible and professional attitude to all aspects of work.
  • Excellent in both oral and written English & Mandarin;
  • Good team player;
  • Self-motivated and result driven;
  • Willing to travel frequently.
